NYSC now offers Interactive Metronome

    What is the Interactive Metronome?

Interactive MetronomeThe Interactive Metronome (IM) is an advanced brain-based treatment program designed to promote and enhance neurological performance and recovery. IM incorporates motor planning and sequencing to improve the brain's inherent ability to repair or remodel itself through a process called neuroplasticity. IM is used in over 1,500 facilities, including hospitals, schools and clinics. NY Speech Consultants is excited to offer this treatment approach to you!

The IM program provides a structured, goal-oriented process that challenges the patient to synchronize a range of hand and foot exercises to a precise computer-generated reference tone heard through headphones. The patient attempts to match the rhythmic beat with repetitive motor actions.

What are the benefits of IM?

IM can bring about or contribute to improvements in:

  • Language processing
  • Social communication
  • Planning and sequencing
  • Attention and concentration
  • Control of impulsivity and aggression

    Who can benefit from IM?

Children and adults with:

  • Developmental Delays
  • Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD)
  • Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Stroke (CVA)
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

IM can improve academic performance

Several studies have shown that IM improves academic performance in unimpaired children and young adults. One study involved more than 1,500 middle and high school students who received 12 one-hour IM sessions. Students were pre and post tested using the Woodcock-Johnson III standardized test. Analysis of the results showed an increase of 2.25 grade equivalent (GE) performance in reading fluency and an increase of 1.7 GE performance in math fluency.

IM is currently being provided at top private and public schools to improve academic performance.

IM has been shown to improve athletic performance

Interactive Metronome29 student athletes from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Ft. Lauderdale received IM training over a span of 15 days. After completing the training, the students achieved functional improvements in athletic performance. Some comments by participants regarding their athletic performance include:

"I am in the right place at the right time."
"I can adjust to defense better, especially reading the blitz and calling audibles."
"I feel my body is more in sync with my mind and it reacts better than prior to IM training."

How long is an IM treatment program?

Because IM is tailored to individual patient needs, there is not a set number of sessions. IM treatment programs for individuals without or with minimal physical or cognitive impairments usually consist of 12-15 sessions. Each session is approximately one hour in duration and the program is usually completed over a period of 4-6 weeks. IM treatment plans for people with more severe disabilities may require a modification in the number, frequency, and duration of sessions.

What is the recommended frequency of sessions?

Depending upon individual characteristics, some patients will respond well with IM sessions twice or even once per week, while others will require four or even five sessions per week to achieve maximum benefit. IM sessions at a more frequent interval will yield better results than the same number of sessions conducted less frequently.

An IM course at NY Speech Consultants includes:

  • A comprehensive screening and evaluation
  • An individualized treatment plan based on your needs and goals
  • Assessment of program effectiveness at the conclusion of treatment
